Margaret "Wilma' Wilson Wright     [Back to Top]

Margaret “Wilma” Wilson Wright, 92, formerly of Pea Ridge St., Glen Alpine, NC entered into the arms of God on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Born in Burke County, NC on June 15, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Edward Lee Wilson and Fannie Estelle Williams Wilson. Wilma was a member of Glen Alpine First Baptist Church. A devoted, loving, kind, and humble mother and grandmother, she enjoyed designing and making quilts, as well as gardening.

Wilma is survived by sons, Eddie Clifton Wright and Jimmy Ray Wright, both of Morganton; a daughter, Maxine Wilma Stacy of Morganton; brothers, Carl, Johnny, Earl, and Howard Wilson; a sister, Mary Ellen Leonhardt; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Romie Vess Wright; brothers, Clarence, Vernon, and Kenneth Wilson; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 4, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah Baptist Church in Casar, NC. The family will receive friends and the funeral home one hour prior to the service.



Charles Boughman     [Back to Top]

Charles Boughman, 95, of Summers Road, Morganton, NC went to be with Jesus on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Country Pines Family Care Home. Born in Burke County, NC on October 2, 1914, he was the son of the late John P. Boughman and Mary Bennett Boughman. Charles was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he had been a deacon and sang in the choir. Charles had been a Gideon and sang with the Choraleers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, having participated in the Battle of Midway. He retired from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, having worked all over the U.S.

Charles is survived by his son, Arvis B. Boughman and wife, Kimberley, of Morganton; a daughter, Sue; grandchildren, Micah, Clara-Ann Boughman and Steve and Jim Clarke; great-grandchildren, Rohman, Monet, Sophia, Whitney, Thatcher, and Allister Clarke.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his first wife, Troy M. Boughman; his second wife, Adelaide Locklear Boughman; brothers, Ernest, Wilson, Jack, and John Boughman; and sisters, Ida Whisenant, Jane Price, and Ella Yount.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Burt Wilbur and Rev. Dr. John Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service. Hubert T. Cook, 91, of Westview St., Valdese, NC died Monday, July 5, 2010 at Autumn Care of Drexel, NC. Born in Cleveland County, NC on August 18, 1918, he was the son of the late Vess Cook and Lela Bumgarner Cook. Hubert was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Casar, NC and actively attended Amherst Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Drexel Heritage Furnishings and loved meeting new friends and visiting with people.

Hubert is survived by his sons, Gerald L. Cook and wife, Marilyn, of Lincolnton, NC and Larry Wayne Cook and wife, Mary, of Valdese; a daughter, Kay C. Rhoney of Valdese; grandchildren, Gerald Bryan Cook, Vickie Fletcher, Regina Propst, Mitchell Cook, Holly Johnson, Michelle Fortune, Tim Rhoney, Tracy Hicks, and Crystal Rhoney; eight great-grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Hubert was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel M. Cook; his second wife, Lizzie W. Cook; brothers, Cletus and George Cook; and a son, Jackie Richard Cook.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Amherst Baptist Church with Reverends Harold Joplin and Timothy Fortune officiating. Norwood Oliver Rector     [Back to Top]

Norwood Oliver Rector, 75, a devoted and loving father, died Sunday, July 4, 2010 at his home in Baton Rouge, LA. Born in Elizabeth City, NC on January 23, 1935, he was the son of the late Oliver Louis Rector and Camilla Hopkins Rector. Norwood was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, VA.

Mr. Rector retired from Louisiana State University Coastal Studies Institute as a Research Associate. He was a U.S. Navy UDT Diver, who opened a sports diving operation on the Outer Banks of NC after completion of his military service. It was while managing his sports diving operation that he first met researchers from the LSU Coastal Studies Institute who were working in the Outer Banks doing a dynamic study. Mr. Rector became one of the first members for building a world-class field support unit within Coastal Studies Institute that has deployed complex field experiments in physical oceanography, marine geology, and coastal meteorology worldwide on every continent except Antarctica.

Norwood is survived by two daughters, Patricia Rector Boston and Tina Rector Cashio and her husband, Michael Cashio, Sr.; grandchildren, Michael Cashio, II, Chloe Boston, Nicholas Cashio, and Matthew Cashio; a brother, Louis Rector and wife, Scottie; a nephew, Bryan Rector; and a niece, Chanda Rector Taylor.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Maxine McCall officiating. Burial will follow in Drexel Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.



Carl Franklin "Frank" Wellmon     [Back to Top]

Carl Franklin “Frank” Wellmon, 79, of Poteat Drive, Drexel, NC died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Burke Palliative Care Center following a brief illness. Born on June 6, 1931, he was the son of the late B. S. Wellmon and Sarah Mabel Poston Wellmon. After retiring from the profession of construction, he became a faithful caregiver to his family. Frank was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, and will be greatly missed by all.

Frank is survived by his brother, Alvin Eugene Wellmon of Rutherford College, NC; sisters, Willie W. Annas of Rutherford College, Nina Kirk Wellmon of Drexel, NC, and Mabel Joy Wellmon of Drexel; a sister-in-law, Brenda Wellmon of Charlotte, NC; and a number of nephews and nieces who loved him dearly.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Hershel Wellmon and Curtis Lee Wellmon, and sisters, Dorothy Boone and Elizabeth Frances Wellmon. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Sally Queen officiating. Charlie Harvey     [Back to Top]

Charlie Harvey, 61, of Casar, NC went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Carolinas Medical Center after an unexpected illness. Born in Lenawee Co., MI on June 1, 1949, he was the son of the late Everette Riddle and Martha Hall Riddle. A former Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a combat veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Charlie worked for Grace Hospital for over 20 years as a respiratory therapist and assisted as a camp counselor at Camp Ginger Cascades.

He is survived by his companion, Hilda Harris of the home; children, Troy Harvey of Morenci, MI, Shane Harvey and wife, Kary, of Greer, SC, Jill Lineberger and husband, Allen, of Casar, Mary Burdette and husband, Jason, of Morganton, and Ben Hutchins of Morganton; grandchildren, Clay and Alexis Harvey, Emma and Eli Lineberger, and Shelby Kirby, Ashley, and Noah Burdette; sisters, Jerry Bell of Morenci, Linda Bar of Hickory, NC, and Deb Riddle of Oak Island, NC; and his former wife, Laura McAllister.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his first wife, Sherry Gipperich.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. At the conclusion of the visitation, military honors will be provided by Valdese American Legion Post #234. Ralph "Jackson" Powell, Jr.     [Back to Top]

Ralph “Jackson” Powell, Jr., 43, of Goodman Lake Rd., Morganton died Wednesday, July 7, 2010. He was born in Montgomery County, AL on August 27, 1966 and was a son of Col Ralph Jackson Powell, Sr. and Julie McLain Powell of Savannah, GA.

Jackson was a longtime resident of Columbus and Savannah, GA and attended St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School for both elementary and high school. Professionally he worked at a horticulturalist at a golf course. Jackson attended St. James Catholic Church in Savannah.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his daughter, Ashley K. Powell and his brother, Jerry T. Powell both of Savannah, extended family includes uncles, aunts and many cousins. Jack, Julie, Ashley and Jerry deeply appreciates the loving support they received from the Powell families in the Oak Hill community.

A memorial service will be held for Ralph Jackson Powell, Jr. at 4:00 p.m., Monday, August 2, 2010 at St. Charles Borromero Catholic Church, Morganton, NC. McArthur "Arthur" Lowery, Sr.     [Back to Top]

McArthur “Arthur” Lowery, Sr., 68, of Rockyford Street, Morganton, NC died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Born in Burke County, NC on March 21 1942, he was the son of the late Dewey Lowery and Lillie Willis Lowery. Arthur was a member of First Advent Christian Church. He worked as a surveyor for over thirty years with Malonee Surveying and Witherspoon Surveying. He was an avid gardener.

A devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Arthur is survived by his wife of fifty years, Ann Murphy Lowery of the home; a daughter, Angie Lowery Alexander and husband, Kevin, of Morganton; a son, McArthur “Mackie” Lowery, Jr. and fiancée, Lori Polk, of Morganton; granddaughters, Jessica and Erin Lowery; brothers, Albert Lowery and wife, Peggy, of Hartselle, AL, Robert Lowery and wife, Beverly, of Greeneville, TN, and Gene Lowery and wife, Sally, of Pontiac, MI; sisters, Faye Hennessee of Drexel, NC, Lois Jenson and husband, Ted, of Astatula, FL, Eula Swafford of Marion, NC, and Lillian Kincaid of Lenoir, NC; and a host of nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Lester Lowery, and a sister, Pat Orr.

The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 11, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Taber officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the NC National Guard. Diane Burns Willis     [Back to Top]

Diane Burns Willis, 47, of Oak Street, Morganton, NC died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Born in Burke County, NC on March 28, 1963, she was the daughter of Jean Loftin Burns and the late Sanford Edward Burns. Diane was a member of Harvest Praise Church. A loving and caring person, she attended to the needs of her mother.

Diane is survived by her husband, Billy Eugene Willis, Jr. of the home; a son, Billy E. Willis, III of Burlington, NC; a brother, Wayne Burns of Morganton; a sister, Nancy Burns-Connelly of Durham, NC; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

In addition to her father, Diane was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Benjamin Frank Connelly, Sr., and her father-in-law, Billy Willis, Sr.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.



Benjamin Jackson "Jack" Foster     [Back to Top]

Benjamin Jackson “Jack” Foster, 82, went to be with his Heavenly Father, July 8, 2010 following a period of declining health. Jack was born in McDowell County on April 28, 1929 and was the son of the late Benjamin Roscoe and Bernice Maybelle Bates Foster. He was a human resource director for several local companies including Coca-Cola WNC, Wamsutta Mills and United Peace Dye in Charleston, SC. Jack was active in the United Way, Western North Carolina Industries, Morganton Rotary Club, NCSHSAA, Human Resources of Burke, and various other community services. Jack was also a member of First Baptist Church, Morganton.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Marie Padgett Foster; his son, J. Bryan Foster and wife, Jaynie; his treasured grandchildren, Morgann and Tyler; cousins, Gladys Washburn and Junior Foster both of Marion; and his canine companion, Max.

A celebration of life will be held at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. A private family burial will be held at Padgett Cemetery. Sara Powell Freeman, 85, of Goodman Lake Road, Morganton, NC passed away Friday, July 9, 2010. Born in Burke County, NC on June 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Lewis A. Powell and Lessie Whisnant Powell. Sara was a member of Zion Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was a former WMU director, and was the circle chairwoman. She worked at Morganton Hosiery Mill, which later changed to Premier, and retired from Henredon Furniture Company.

Sara is survived by her brothers, Robert “Bob” Powell and wife, Huse, of Morganton, retired Col. Ralph J. Powell and wife, Julie, of Savannah, GA, and Charles “Ed” powell and wife, Jane, of Morganton; sisters, Mildred Powell and husband, Paul, Nell Cuthbertson and husband, Dick, and Ruby Carswell, all of Morganton; sisters-in-law, Nancy Powell and Betty Quave; a number of nephews and nieces; and an extended family.

In addition to her parents, Sara was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Freeman; a brother, Albert Powell; and a sister, Ethel McGee.

Elizabeth Patton Lane, 76, of Patton Road, Morganton, NC died unexpectedly Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on July 29, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Hence Patton and Edith Bolding Patton. Elizabeth was a 1952 graduate of Glen Alpine High School. A devout Christian, she was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was devoted to her family and church family. Elizabeth lived her life in the service of her family and others and for the will of her Lord and Savior.

She is survived by two sons, Greg Lane and wife, Debbie, and Gary Lane and wife, Tammy, both of Morganton; grandchildren, Daniel Lane and wife, Ashley, and Derek Lane; brothers, Len Patton and wife, Nancy, Troy Patton and wife, JoAnn, David Patton, Willard Patton and wife, Clara, and Alfred Patton and wife, Mary, all of Morganton, and Edward Patton and wife, Karen, of Huntingtown, MD; sisters, Eldorador Norman and husband, Dallas, and Edith Worsham and husband, Darrell, both of Morganton, and Kaye Cline and husband, Carl, of Icard, NC; sisters-in-law, Dianne Patton and Judy Patton, both of Morganton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Lane; a son, Christopher A. Lane; eleven brothers, Una, Ronnie, Don, Robert, Nelson, Harold, Ernest, John Wesley, Jacob, Douglas, and Logan Patton; and three sisters, Bertie Patton Branch, Rosa Lee Patton, and Fannie Patton.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Bess officiating. Burial will follow in Missionary Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. Megan DeHaven Pritchard     [Back to Top]

Megan DeHaven Pritchard, 35, of Woodlea Dr. in Morganton died unexpectedly Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. She was born May 27, 1975 in Broward County, FL, and was a daughter of Paula Terry DeHaven of Morganton, and the late Larry Ryder DeHaven.

Megan was a beautiful, gentle soul who touched many lives in the short amount of time she was allowed here. She was an actress, singer, model, dancer, comedian, prankster and friend to all who knew and loved her. Her world rose and spun tight around her son, her husband, her loved ones and all the possibilities that God had blessed each of them with. She was a best friend and soulmate to her husband, a teacher, fierce protector and comforter to her loving son, Taylor. Throughout her life, she gave us love and laughter, light and compassion, spreading peace and reason to those who could find none on their own. She loved animals, snuggling with her son on rainy days and adding smiles and warmth anywhere she could carry them. She was a dreamer; a celebration of all that was kind and could be right with the world. She will forever be missed, celebrated and adored...

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Robb Pritchard, and a son, Taylor Renee DeHaven Pritchard, both of the home; brothers, Ryan and Ryder DeHaven, both of Morganton; and a sister, Milan Chezem and husband, Buster of Glen Alpine, NC.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Reverends Rocky Reese and Doug St. John officiating. Henry “James” McKee, 78, of Conley Rd, Morganton, NC went home to be with his heavenly father on Monday, July 12, 2010 at the Burke Palliative Care Center. Born in Columbus Co., NC on January 30, 1932, he was the son of the late William James McKee and Lucy Hobbs McKee. James was a member of First Assembly of God. A U.S. Army veteran, he is a retired employee of Broughton Hospital, where he worked for thirty years. He was also an employee of Dixie Container. James was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Edith Smith McKee of the home; a son, Jeff McKee and wife, Tina, of Morganton; a daughter, Pam Hudson of Morganton; grandchildren, Nichole Kirschner and husband, Adam, Josh Hudson, Tiffany McKee, Jacob Hudson, and Jalyn Hudson; a great-grandson, Dorian Kirschner and two other great-grandchildren expected this fall; brothers, William Lawrence McKee and wife, Faye, of Raleigh, NC, Vinson McKee and wife, Sandra, of Morganton, Vernon McKee and wife, Ruth, of Morganton, and Harold L. McKee of Morganton; sisters, Emily Watkins of Oxford, NC and Linda Pritchard of Morganton; and a number of nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Russ and Opal McKee.

Tommy Pete Smith, 73, of Burkemont Ave. in Morganton died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Burke Palliative Care Center in Valdese following a period of declining health. He was born August 16, 1936 in Burke County, and was a son of the late Ivey Smith and Lola Causby Smith. Tommy was a retired employee of Broughton Hospital with over 29 years of service.

He is survived by children, Johnny Smith, and a daughter, Denise Smith Hopson and her husband, Chad, all of Morganton; one grandson, Teddy Allen Mayfield; brothers, Jim Smith and wife, Rebecca, and Ralph Smith, both of Morganton; and sisters, Becky Poarch and husband, Brathel, and Joyce Lingerfeldt and husband, Ken, all of Morganton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Martha Deaton Smith; a son, Rodney Deon Smith; daughters, Angie Metcalf and Rebecca Dee Smith; and brothers, Robert and John Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Quaker Meadows Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Andrew Parkey and Rev. Ken Mashburn officiating. James A. Puett, 88, of Tate St., Morganton, NC died Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Burke Palliative Care Center. Born April 6, 1922, he was the son of the late Lloyd Edgar Puett and Laura Mossie Weeks Puett. James was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and served in the European Theater. He was a member of North Morganton United Methodist Church. James worked as knitter for Full Fashion Hosiery Mill and then retired as a Health Care Supervisor at Broughton Hospital.

James is survived by his wife, Mabel Kincaid Puett of the home; a daughter, Licata Puett Wagner of the home; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bobby A. Puett of Tucson, AZ.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Puett Roberts, and brothers, Lloyd Weeks Puett and Howard Puett.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 2010 at North Morganton United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Shaw officiating. George Lewis Knapp, 74, of St. Mary’s Church Rd. in Morganton died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Britthaven of Morganton. He was born November 7, 1935 in Battle Creek, Michigan, and was a son of the late George Knapp and Margaret Oster Knapp. George was a US Army veteran. He is survived by his former wife, Sylvia Fountaine Knapp of Morganton. No funeral services are planned at this time. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ruth Hoyle Kimbrell, 76, of Poteat Rd., Morganton, NC died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. Born in Rutherford Co., NC on December 16, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Belo A. Hoyle and Lillie Florence Ross Hoyle. She worked in the dietary department of Western Carolina Center for twenty-five years. Ruth was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and her church, Burkemont Baptist Church.

Ruth is survived by her son, Philip Kimbrell and wife, Donna, of Morganton; daughters, Janice Brewington and husband, Ray, and Amy Michaels and husband, Chris, all of Morganton; grandchildren, Holly Page and husband, Josh, of Hickory, NC, and Wendy Kimbrell, Paige Kimbrell, Justin Austin, Dakota Michaels, and Alora Michaels, all of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Connor, Tanner, and Lucas Page, all of Hickory; siblings, Herman Hoyle and wife, Bea, of Bostic, NC, Bernie Hoyle and wife, Nell, of Shelby, Ruby Hutchins of Morganton, Lillian Greene and husband, Amos, of Kings Mountain, NC, and Robert Hoyle and wife, Irene, of Bostic.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Modene Landis, and a brother, Billy Hoyle.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills and Rev. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mary Tate Greene, 93, of Grace Ridge Retirement Community died Friday, July 16, 2010 following a period of declining health. She was born in McDowell County on August 12, 1916 and was a daughter of the late E. M. and Margaret Stepp Tate. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband, Hershal F. Greene, her loving step-mother, Addie Quinn Tate, and by brothers, Locke Tate and Murray Tate, Jr.

She graduated from Pleasant Gardens High School in Marion, NC and from General Hospital School of Nursing in Knoxville, TN. Mary spent most of her career at Broughton Hospital and retired in 1976 as Superintendant of Nursing. Mary was a long time member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church and was involved in much charitable work following her retirement. Surviving are her sons and their wives, Ralph and Sandra Greene of Longwood, FL, Sherrill and Quinn Greene of Ft. Myers, FL, and George and Julie Greene of Hampton, VA; brothers, Roy Tate of New Port Ritchey, FL and John Tate of Newton, NC; a sister, Stella Marlowe of Marion; a sister-in-law, Mildred Tate of Pleasant Gardens; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Allen Boliek officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Sossoman Funeral Home. William Kenneth “Bill” Port, Sr., 75, of Jamestown Rd., Morganton, NC passed at home Saturday, July 17, 2010 after an extended illness. Bill was born June 30, 1935 in Burke County to the late Kenneth Charles Port and Iris Smith Port Mull. He was a loving and loyal husband, father, son and friend. He loved his wife with all his heart and soul. Bill worked very hard to be a wonderful provider for his family. He grew and raised a huge garden to share with his family and friends. Known by most as “Bill”, he was lovingly called “daddy or “Pop” by his family. He never let the truth get in the way of a good story - anything for a laugh. He was a member of Gibbs Chapel Wesleyan Church, but also attended Morganton Seventh Day Adventist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Catherine Janette Thompson Port.

Bill is survived by a son, Kenn Port and his wife, Cheryl of Candler, NC; daughters, Lisa Port Garland of Marion and Lorina Port Crook and her husband, Michael of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Heather Port, Catherine Port, Charles Port, Ashley Garland, Megan Garland, Alexandria Crook and Riley Crook; great grandchildren, Taylor Garland, Landon Garland and Jenson Hawkins; a sister, Linda Joann Brown of Morganton; a very special aunt, Beulah Anderson; a special brother-in-law and his wife, Dean and Velma Thompson; and a great friend Joe Frisbee.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Gibbs Chapel Wesleyan Church with Rev. Roger Brackett, Rev. Dean Lavender and Pastor Barry Mahorney officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Sossoman Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence. James Carlton Miller, 80 of Conover, NC died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, NC following a brief battle with cancer. Born October 23, 1929 in Ashe County, NC, he was a son of the late Carl and Hala Woodie Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, R. C. Miller; a sister, Bobbie Miller Francis; his stepmother, LaRena Shatley Miller; a sister-in-law, Zelma Miller; and extended family at heart, Mary Whisnant Chester, Mary Ellen Chester Fox and Roy Chester.

Surviving are his sisters, Sue Miller Phillips and her husband, Gary; Evone Miller Graybeal, and Donna Miller Reeves; a brother-in-law, Herbert Francis. Also surviving are his family at heart, Ervin Chester, R. L Chester and his wife, Helen, Jean Chester Calvin and her husband, Luther, Iris Chester Fox and her husband, Gene, Lillie Chester Bennett, and Ruby Royal Chester.

The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 22, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. James Smith Sharpe officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service. Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. Carol Celeste Anderson Austin     [Back to Top]

Carol Celeste Anderson Austin, 76, of Creekside Dr. in Morganton died unexpectedly, Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Born in Davidson County on October 21, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Robert Leo Anderson and Thelma Eulalia Hedrick Anderson. Celeste was a graduate of Davis Townsend High School in Davidson County where she was a star basketball player. She then attended High Point College where Celeste was a varsity cheerleader, a member of Phi Mu Sorority, and was in the May Court. She served as both the church and financial secretary of the First Reformed Church in Burlington. Celeste was a former member and past president of the Junior Women’s Club in Burlington. After moving to Albemarle, she took a position as the executive secretary of the Stanley County Mental Health Association. She moved to Morganton in 1978 and worked in marketing for Drexel-Heritage Furnishings until her retirement. Following retirement, Celeste became a customer service representative for Goodys Clothing Store. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on many committees for the church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, J. Farrell Austin of the home; a son, James Farrell “Jay” Austin, Jr. and wife, Rebecca of Black Mountain; a daughter, Jamie Austin Johnston and husband, Watkins of Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Watkins Cook Johnston, IV and Carol Hartwell Johnston; sisters, Bobbe Conrad of Thomasville, NC, and Gail Craver and husband, Bill of Welcome, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews who were all Celeste’s favorites.

In addition to her parents, Celeste was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Fairview Memorial Park in Albemarle with Rev. Dr. Sydnor Thompson officiating. Louise Aiken Hefner, 85, of Nebo, NC died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC. Born in Union Co., SC on October 6, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harding Aiken and Florence Aiken. Louise was a member of Snowhill United Methodist Church and worked at Broughton Hospital for thirty years. She loved animals and took in any strays.

A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by her sons, Mike Hefner of Morganton and Albert Hefner and wife, Linda, of Chesapeake, VA; a step-daughter, Dorothy Lee of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Matthew Hefner of Morganton, Mitchell Hefner of Morganton, Rita Viola and husband, Sam, of Chesapeake, VA and their daughter, Tori Schumacher, and Richard Hefner and wife, Jennifer, and their family, of San Diego, CA.

In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Winfred Hefner, and sisters, Bertie Farmer and Beulah Amaker.

The funeral will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Magnuson officiating. Gina Patton Wilson, 45, of Lawrenceville, GA went to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, July 22, 2010 after an extended illness. Born on September 5, 1964, she was the daughter of Judy Swink Patton and the late Ernest Lee “Bob” Patton. Gina was a loving mother and daughter and befriended everyone whom she came in contact with.

She is survived by her daughter, Aeron Kaci Wilson of Lawrenceville; a sister, Kay Patton Gervias of Suwanee, GA; a step-daughter, Amity Wilson of Taylors, SC; a step-son, Derek Wilson of Bethlehem, GA; a step-father, Herman Duckworth of Morganton, NC; and three step-grandchildren.

A cryptside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the mausoleum for half an hour prior to the service. Goldie Hull Lail, 81, of Laurel Creek St. in Connelly Springs, NC died Friday, July 23, 2010 at her residence. Born March 1, 1929 in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Hosie Hull and Bessie Cook Hull. Goldie was a member of Smart’s Grove Baptist Church. She loved to cook and bake for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Earnest Hoover Lail of the home; sons, Earnest Ray Lail, Sr. and wife, Judy, and Garry Wayne Lail, Sr., all of Connelly Springs; grandchildren, April Denise Lail, Earnest Ray Lail, Jr. and wife, Amber, Melonie Lail, Samantha Lail, Garry Wayne Lail, Jr., and Joshua Lee Lail; and a great grandson, Kenneth Jeremiah Crane Lail.

In addition to her parents, Goldie was preceded in death by brothers, Bennie, Columbus, Tonnie, Belo, Thomas, Cletus, and Raymond Hull; and sisters, Dellie Parker, Minnie Young, Zullie Parker, and Viola Rector Hasting.

Flora Mae Clark Harwood, 73, of Morganton died Friday, July 23, 2010, following a period of declining health. She was born Burke County on January 16, 1937 and was a daughter of the late Frank and Dollie Singleton Clark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Melvin Clark. Mrs. Harwood was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an avid Gardner, who especially enjoyed her flower garden. Mrs. Harwood was a retired employee of Doblin.

Surviving are her husband, Johnnie Harwood of the home; sons, Brian Harwood and Bruce Harwood and his wife, Debbie, all of Morganton; daughters, Brenda Brown of Spruce Pine, NC, Karen Harrelson and her husband, David of Wellington, AL, Ellen Swink and her husband, Edd of Morganton; brothers, Bruce Clark of Morganton and Oliver Clark of Wilmington, NC; sisters, Sue Johnson, Ruby Harris, Margie Anderson, and Laura Johnston all of Morganton, and Lucille Shue of Concord; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, July 26, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. Rocky Reese officiating. Rev. Ted Pope, 80, of Forest Hill Street, Morganton, NC died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at his residence. Born in Portsmouth, VA on October 1, 1929, he was the son of the late George Pope and Beulah Pope. Rev. Pope was a member of First Baptist Church and lived his beliefs. He was a loving, compassionate, and generous husband, father, and grandfather.

Rev. Pope is survived by his son, Ted Pope and wife, Laura, of Morganton; a sister-in-law, Ione Pope of Topsail Beach, NC; and grandsons, Nicholas and Dylan Pope. In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Harris Spears Pope, five brothers, and four sisters.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Burke Memorial Park with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. Military honors will be provided by Valdese American Legion Post #234. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home. Joyce L. Pritchard, 72, died Monday, July 26, 2010 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro following a period of declining health. Born April 27, 1938 in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Monroe Lowdermilk and Sudie Moore Lowdermilk.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Pritchard of the home; a son, Kenneth Monroe Pritchard and wife, Cheryl of Morganton; daughters, Rita Morrill and husband, Michael of Glen Alpine, and Tonya Clark and husband, Allan of Morganton; a sister, Lena Tweed of Drexel; an aunt, Margaret Whisenant of Morganton; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Pritchard Clontz Cemetery in Morganton with Rev. Douglas St. John officiating. Margaret Benfield Sisk, 85, of Burke Dr., Morganton died Monday, July 26, 2010 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, after an extended illness. She was born October 23, 1924 in Burke County to the late Olen Gainwell Benfield and Mattie Saulman Benfield. Mrs. Sisk was a member of North Morganton United Methodist Church and had retired from Valdese Manufacturing with 37 years of service. Mrs. Sisk was known to all by her many acts of kindness and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Watson Theodore Sisk; a grandson, Adam Gedwin Sisk; brothers, Odell “Bud”, Dewey, Thomas and Ed Benfield; sisters, Mildred Campbell and Faye Abee.

Mrs. Sisk is survived by her sons, Ervin Roderick Sisk of Fort Bragg, CA and Donald Pinkney Sisk and wife, Brenda of Taylorsville, NC; a sister, Barbara Benfield Cox of Morganton; grandchildren, Donald Jason Sisk and wife Teresa, Adrinne Sisk Wrinkle and husband, Chuck; great grandchildren, Addison Jailee Sisk and Andrew Gedwin Wrinkle; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Lalage Grigg Freeman, 95, of Grace Ridge in Morganton died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Grace Hospital. Born September 11, 1914 in Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Randolph Grigg and Susan Gold Grigg. Lalage was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and an avid reader and bridge player.

Lalage is survived by a son, John Thomas Tucker and wife, Ramona, of Carriere, MS; a daughter, Margaret Tucker Puckett and husband, Dr. James Puckett, of Asheville; step-sons, John Freeman of Charlotte, and Tom Freeman and wife, Connie, of Morganton; grandchildren, Jack Tucker and wife, Kelly, and Dr. James Puckett and wife, Dr. Joanne Wen; step-grandchildren, Robin Burton and husband, Dustin, Leigh Perry and husband, Tony, Charles Freeman, John Freeman and wife, Robin; and a step-great grandson, Kyle Hutton.

In addition to her parents, Lalage was preceded in death by husbands, John Thomas Tucker and Samuel Williamson Freeman; a brother, Wendell Randolph Grigg; and a sister, Hazel Grigg McCurry.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 31, 2010 in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. J. C. Dellinger, 77, of the Longtown Community passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Burke Hospice after a long extended illness. He was born in Burke County on January 6, 1933 and was a son of the late Ben and Essie Flynn Dellinger. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, son, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. J.C. was also a great friend to many. J. C. was a U. S. Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. He was a retired employee of Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, enjoyed many outdoor sports especially bear hunting, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a wonderful daughter, Terrie Revonda, a brother, Alvin Dellinger, and a sister, Lola Beatrice.

J. C. is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Pearl Duckworth Dellinger. He is also survived by grandchildren, Misty Shane and her husband, Adam, of Hickory and Ben McGalliard and his wife, Kelly of Newport News, VA; great-grandchildren, Brittany of Spruce Pine and Shelby Brooke of Hickory; brothers, Ray Dellinger and his wife, Hazel and Carl Dellinger and his wife, Belle, all of the Lake James community; sisters, Dorothy Crooks and her husband, Jim, Laura Johnson and her husband, Johnny, all of the Lake James community, and Sue Chapman of Morganton.

Bobby Gene Rutherford, 58, of Wallace Road, Morganton, NC went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. Born in McDowell County, NC on August 19, 1951, he was the son of Maxine Francis Rutherford and the late William B. Rutherford. Bobby was of the Baptist Faith. He was an honor graduate of Isothermal Community College with a degree in cosmetology. He enjoyed fishing and fast cars. He loved his family and his many friends.

Bobby is survived by four sisters, Juanita Rutherford, Patricia Shade and Harold, Mary “Frannie” Brown and husband, Donald, and Sharon Rutherford, all of Morganton; aunts and uncles, Ola Caldwell and husband, Robert, Charles Francis, Clarence Francis, Leon Francis, Mary Francis, Virginia Francis, Ruth Rutherford, and Edna Rutherford; nieces and nephews, Kevin Rutherford, Sonia Shade Merrill, Pamela Shade, Candace Rutherford, Donald Brown, Jr., and Brittainy Wright; lifelong special friends, Diane DuBoyd and Tony Ervin; his former wife, Laura C. Rutherford; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his father, Bobby was preceded in death by an infant sister, Pamela K. Rutherford.

Ella Stilwell "Mom" Digh     [Back to Top]

Ella Stilwell “Mom” Digh, 94, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2010. Born in Catawba County, NC on June 15, 1916, she was the daughter of Elich Stilwell and Lucy Yount Stilwell. Mom operated Marshall’s Snack Bar in Morganton in the early 60s. That led to the starting of the chain of over 200 restaurants of Mom and Pop’s Ham House, Western Steer Family Steakhouse, Mom and Pop’s Bakery, and Mom and Pop’s Ham Curing Plant.

Mom was a member of Westport Baptist Church. She loved cooking and gardening. She was a spunky, witty, outgoing person who loved life and everyone she met. Everyone who knew Mom loved her. She resided at the Pines of Davidson.

Mom is survived by sons, Marshall Digh and wife, Frances, of Denver, NC and Ronnie Digh and wife, Becky, of Gastonia, NC; grandchildren, Andrew Digh of Macon, GA, Allison Bumgardner and husband, Kyle, of Charlotte, NC, Marsha Digh and husband, David, of Bethlehem, NC, Gemma Digh of Claremont, NC, and Robert Digh and wife, Hope, of Denver; and great-grandchildren, Ella Bumgardner, Kate Bumgardner, Aaron Digh, Anna Digh, Hunter Gabriel, and Robin Bentley.

In addition to her parents, Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Solen “Pop” Digh.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Westport Baptist Church in Denver, NC with Rev. Mike Young officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at Burke Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westport Baptist Church “He Is Worthy” Building Fund, 2372 Lakeshore Road South, Denver, NC 28037.
